Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, an Ancient Fortified City of Morocco
Aït Ben Haddou (Berber: Ath Benhadu, Arabic: آيت بن حدّو) is a fortified city, or ksar, along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in the foothills on the southern slopes of the High Atlas. You get there on foot through the river. There is no electricity but a great sense of adventure, and many candles at dinner time.
This impressive fortification is a striking example of the traditional earth and wood architecture and the culture of southern Morocco, having earthen buildings crowded together within high defensive walls reinforced by angle towers and pierced with a baffle gate. Aït Ben Haddou is famous as a pre-Saharan habitat and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many movies such as The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and the Prince of Persia have been shot there, just to name a few.
